Feminism and blogging are making increasingly common bedfellows, nowadays. Come and learn/share knowledge about what we're finding out there on the web, and what we might create.

We'll be addressing
1) feminist blogging in general. We'll talk about our favourite sources for feminist stuff, and the advantages and disadvantages of this medium for feminism.
2) creating a blog as a group project. The nuts and bolts are in place, and we want to get your input and let you how you can participate now. If you haven't taken a peek yet, go here.

hosted by Nichole and Tara. Look for Nichole and her laptop when you get to the Bookworm, and if you have any queries, click on Tara's name under Asst. Organizers on the left, there.

This is genre-busting, rule-bending and ambitiously original, award-winning play. Penned by Linda Griffiths Age of Arousal is a lavish, sexy ensemble piece about the forbidden and gloriously liberated self.

THE GIST OF IT...
The setting is 1885: a time of great passion, great confusion. A population imbalance leaves London flooded with half a million more woman than men and an escalating suffrage movement has ushered in a rip-roaring New Age. Mary Barfoot, an ex-militant suffragette, runs a school for secretaries with her beloved Rhoda. The school?s invasion by three spinster sisters and a charismatic cad named Everard, creates a catalyst for political, sexual and emotional explosion. Ideas and libidos clash for dominance, as each character confronts the meaning of revolutionary courage.

WHEN:
Play runs from Nov 17th- Dec 17th (Tuesday to Saturday at 8:00 p.m., Wednesday 12:30 p.m., Saturday 2: 00pm, Sunday 2:00 pm)

Dear Lovlies,
History shows midwifery was first performed by women. But alas age of science brought eager "men mid wives" and gynecology become the new term on the block. Now scientist are hard at work determining gender of the baby. At what cost will the process of seeking control of women's bodies stop?

MINUS a speaker, I invite you to explore the social and historical impacts of this subject, regardless where you fit on the scale:
- you hate babies
- you can't have any babies
- you don't want to have a baby
- you're not ready to have a baby
- you're working on having a baby
- you're pregnant
- you lost your baby

cheers,
Magda

Hello ladies! Owing to the past weeks of turmoil in Burma/Myanmar, as well as your stated desire to get more politically involved, I thought we could dedicate this month's book club meeting to discussing Burma. I don't know about you, but I'm not too informed about Burmese politics. So, who better to turn to than 1992's Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, a political dissident who has been under house arrest for 17 years, since she dared to run for P.M. and win the only free election in Burma's history. Aung San Suu Kyi is also a renowned Buddhist mystic whose political and spiritual practices have been influenced by the nonviolent principles of Mahatma Gandhi. Whether the Saffron Revolution succeeds or the Burmese government is able to cover-up this month's political uprisings, we will hopefully come away from this book club with a heightened awareness of Burmese politics, history, and the important role that Aung San Suu Kyi has played in the development of East Asian democracy.

Freedom From Fear and other writings is available online, in the Toronto Public Libraries, at York University Libraries, and at the U of T's Robarts Library. Next month we will return to our poll to select the Nov. discussion topic.

Why a bookclub?
Feels as natural to do as breathing. And the name behind the bookclub I "borrowed" from my favourite CBC show "Gill Deacon".

Please send me suggestions of titles you'd like us to discuss on the next meetup. Preferably, themes of books should somehow relate to the meetup. For the month of September the Polls have spoken and the winner is Alice Sebold's LUCKY.

Enjoy the read.

Hey gang! Let's get out and get involved!
-Tara

Grab a sign, and let's march!

The community fair starts at 5:30pm at the Sherbourne Health Centre 333 Sherbourne Street, rally at 7:00pm at the Allan Gardens Park, and the march at 8:00pm.

THE MEETUP WILL BE AT PITALAND AT 6:30, PRIOR TO THE RALLY, SO WE CAN FIND EACH OTHER AND GET ORGANIZED. I'LL BE WEARING A RAINBOW-COLOURED HAT TO MAKE IT EASIER TO FIND EACH OTHER.

Members of our meetup group have developed signs and flyers around the theme "Build Community for Safety".

This info is cut and pasted from the Women's Bookstore's website:

"The TBTN march is an event organized by feminist grassroots, anti-violence & anti-oppression activist groups all around the world with a focus on women's rights & safety for women and children." says Grissel Orellana, TRCC/MWAR outreach & community development Coordinator. A community fair, rally and protest march has been organized. The march is for women and children only, men are encouraged to attend in solidarity, by participating in the other activities, including the provision of childcare so their partners, mothers, sisters, and aunties can march. TBTN is a Trans -Positive, wheelchair accessible event with ASL interpretation, childcare, food and refreshments.

Please don't hesitate to patronize Pita Land as they've been very welcoming to us!
