dear boys and girls, no speakers for this show stopping topic. summer may be nearly done but we're just getting started! once again, opening a line of discussion based on academic/non academic opinions. If CNN's your window to the world, that's fine too. Cross-cultural comparisons are always welcomed. Things are more related than meets the eye. Come on down.=) I welcome all.

*The student bar I've chosen accepts cash only.

Why a bookclub?
Feels as natural to do as breathing. And the name behind the bookclub I "borrowed" from my favourite CBC show "Gill Deacon".

Please send me suggestions of titles you'd like us to discuss on the next meetup. Preferably, themes of books should somehow relate to the meetup. Once I have a good number, I'll put it up within "Polls", so everyone can have a say which book we should read for next time.

For this meetup I selected Kate Chopin's "the Awakening".
Friend reccomended it to me a while back, claiming it changed her life.

Enjoy the read.

Since we'll be attending Take Back the Night this September, let's do something creative to get a little more involved it the proceedings. At this event, we're gonna dig in and get our hands dirty. With poster paints!

This get together is to paint signs with slogans/images to carry at the march, and maybe make a banner.

Our theme idea is "Community = Safety". Get to know your neighbors; look out for one another; smile and say hi. Basically, shape your neighbourhood so that you can feel comfortable in it. I really like the idea of doing a spin on a block parent or neighborhood watch sign. We're working on what that might look like.

What you'll be doing:

1. Bring your slogan/image ideas. Chants, too, if you got 'em!

2. Bring any supplies you have on hand. We'll need cardboard (old boxes will be fine), paints, fat and thin paintbrushes, and if anybody has an old sheet we could make us a nifty banner with it! (If you'll be bringing supplies mention it in your RSVP, so I don't buy doubles).

3. Paint signs!

We'll be taking advantage of the Actiongrrrlz time at the 519 Community Centre to work on this.

Here's a little description of their group (which by the way, I've never attended before, but I'm really excited about!)

" Action Grrrlz is a grrrlie network, a way for grrrlz of all kinds to get together to work on those projects (knitting, writing, zine making etc) that never seem to get started - or finished.

Action Grrrlz is both an online group and a group that meets once a month at The 519. "

If you're so inclined, please come and work with us even if you're not sure or can't make the actual TBTN event in September. Many hands make light work!

Looking ahead to Take Back the Night in September, we should do something creative. If anyone would like to toss around ideas for what that might be, come for coffee!
(Don't worry yet about whether you'll be able to make it to TBTN, we're just talking about brainstorming at this point;)

I'll wear my green Ramones T-shirt, and if you don't see me downstairs, look upstairs!

Media/Culture vs. Gender.
Certain issues may feel like a deja vu from a Women's Studies course.

Nonetheless, discussing the topic of 'gender' is one that is fantastic to start the meetup with.
Everyone has their own view, so please come by and share.

Suggested audio visual material for discussion: "Orlando"

So I've decided to create a group on Feminism, now what, right?
Well...plenty of gabbing about the topic, once a month.
This being a first time I thought it neat to do a social jibber jabber-
a word I thought best described getting to know any new members.

*Chosen location is open til 2am for those working late. Link to map:
